Only one of these consoles actually runs GTA 6: the PS5. The PS4 and PS4 Pro do not get the game at all. Confirmed So this is not a "which version looks better" comparison, it is a clear-eyed look at what last-gen could never deliver and what moving to a PS5 actually buys you for Grand Theft Auto VI on 19 November 2026.
We keep this honest. Rockstar has confirmed the platform list and the date. It has not confirmed resolution, frame-rate or install size, so anywhere this page would otherwise quote a number, you will see it flagged as unverified.
The comparison at a glance
| Aspect | PS4 / PS4 Pro | PS5 (incl. PS5 Pro) |
|---|---|---|
| Runs GTA 6 | No | Yes |
| Rockstar status | Not a platform | Confirmed launch platform |
| Storage | Mechanical hard drive | Fast built-in SSD |
| CPU generation | 2013-era, low-power cores | Current-gen, far stronger |
| Memory bandwidth | Limited | Much higher |
| Ray tracing hardware | None | Yes (PS5 family) |
| Continuous-world streaming | Struggles with density | Built for it |
| Target resolution / FPS | n/a | Unconfirmed |
The single row that matters most is the first one. No amount of detail in the others changes the fact that a PS4 or PS4 Pro cannot run GTA 6. The rest of the table explains why the line was drawn where it was.
What the PS4 (and PS4 Pro) could never deliver
The PS4 Pro was a solid mid-gen refresh, but it is still a PS4 at heart: the same basic architecture, a mechanical drive option, and a CPU that was modest even in 2016. For a game as dense and continuous as Leonida, the Pro hits the same walls the base PS4 does, just slightly later. It was never going to stream a world of this scale without compromises Rockstar clearly chose not to make.

What the PS5 brings
The PS5 is the floor Rockstar built on, so everything GTA 6 does assumes this hardware:
- An SSD that keeps the world loaded as you drive, fly and boat across Leonida, with far less pop-in and near-instant fast travel.
- Headroom for density, more memory and bandwidth to drive crowds, traffic, water and weather at once.
- Hardware ray-tracing support on the PS5 family, which modern lighting and reflections can take advantage of.
Whether GTA 6 targets 30fps, 60fps, a quality mode, a performance mode, or some combination, is not confirmed. Treat any specific resolution or frame-rate claim as a Leak / rumour until Rockstar publishes it.
Is the PS5 Pro worth it for GTA 6?
Honest answer: we cannot tell you yet, because the targets that would justify a Pro are exactly the numbers Rockstar has not confirmed. A standard PS5 is a confirmed, fully capable GTA 6 platform. The PS5 Pro adds extra GPU power that may enable a higher-fidelity or higher-frame-rate mode, but until Rockstar details GTA 6's modes, anyone promising "the Pro is essential" is guessing. For most buyers, the value question is settled on the cheapest PS5 for GTA 6 page.

The bottom line
- PS4 and PS4 Pro: no GTA 6, no workaround. Here is why PS4 is skipped and why there is no way around it.
- PS5 (any model): confirmed. Plan your move with the PS4 trade-in guide and which PS5 to buy.
