GTA 6 Will Not Come to PS4: The Official Platform List, Explained

Last updated:

Published 25 October 2026.

With Grand Theft Auto VI launching on 19 November 2026, the question this site was built to answer now has the strongest possible evidence behind it. Pre-orders have been open for four months, a launch trailer is out and the pre-load starts on 12 November. In all of that, there is no PlayStation 4 version anywhere: no store listing, no price and no download. Confirmed

What the official sources say

The platform list has been consistent in every official announcement. When Take-Two and Rockstar opened pre-orders on 24 June 2026, the release named PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and nothing else, with prices of $79.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition (Take-Two investor news, 24 June 2026). Sony's own post the same day was titled "Grand Theft Auto VI plays best on PS5 November 19" and described DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers and Tempest 3D audio, features a PS4 does not have (PlayStation Blog, 24 June 2026).

Since then, Rockstar's An Extended Look premiered on 27 August 2026 (Rockstar Newswire), and the launch trailer followed on 15 October, captured in-game on a PS5 (God is a Geek). None of these mention last-gen consoles.

Why a late PS4 surprise is not realistic

A console version needs a store product, a certification and a download. Four weeks before launch, PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 only as a PS5 game, tagged PS5 Pro Enhanced. Even the boxed retail edition, which goes on sale on 12 November, contains a download code rather than a disc, so there is no "PS4 disc" that could appear in a shop. Older claims about a hidden PS4 build, from the 2022 leak to datamined title IDs, have never produced anything a PS4 can run; our leak and rumour page goes through each one.

The technical reasons are covered in depth on why GTA 6 is not on PS4. In short, the game is built around fast SSD streaming and current-gen memory and CPU budgets. That part is press and developer analysis, not a Rockstar statement; Rockstar has simply never listed a last-gen platform.

What upgrading costs right now

If you want to play on 19 November, you need a PS5 (or an Xbox Series X|S). Prices are higher than a year ago. Sony raised recommended prices worldwide on 2 April 2026, citing "continued pressures in the global economic landscape" (PlayStation Blog, 27 March 2026):

Console US UK Europe
PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 £519.99 €599.99
PS5 (disc drive) $649.99 £569.99 €649.99
PS5 Pro $899.99 £789.99 €899.99

These are Sony's recommended prices; retailers run their own deals, so compare before buying. On the Microsoft side, US Xbox Series prices rose again on 1 August 2026, reported at $499.99 for the Series S 512GB and $799.99 for the Series X with a disc drive.

Two money-saving notes for PS4 owners. First, because GTA 6 is a download on every PS5 (even boxed), the cheaper Digital Edition plays it exactly as well as the disc model; see cheapest PS5 for GTA 6. Second, your PS4 still has resale value, and selling it before the launch rush usually pays more; see the trade-in guide.

A realistic timeline for the next four weeks

  1. Now: choose and order a PS5. Delivery times can lengthen near launch.
  2. Any time before 20 November: buy or pre-order GTA 6. Orders placed before 20 November include the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital pre-orders add a free month of GTA+. Details in our PS5 pre-order guide.
  3. From 12 November: pre-load. Switch on automatic downloads in Rest Mode and make room on the SSD. The official file size has not been published yet, so leave generous headroom.
  4. 19 November: launch day.

Staying on PS4 for now?

That is a reasonable choice. GTA 5 and GTA Online keep working on PS4, and if you move later, the PS4 version of GTA V upgrades to PS5 for free. We explain the details in GTA Online and GTA 5 on PS4 after GTA 6 launches.
