Many PS4 owners are not buying a PS5 in time for 19 November, and the question we get most from them is simple: will GTA 5 and GTA Online keep working? Here is what is on the record as of today, and what is guesswork.
Short answer
Yes, for now. No end date for GTA Online on PS4 has been announced, and GTA 5's story mode is a game you own that keeps running regardless. Confirmed GTA 6 itself will not come to PS4 under any circumstances; that is a separate question, covered in our news piece on the official platform list.
What Take-Two said in August
On Take-Two's earnings call of 7 August 2026, an analyst asked about the pace of GTA Online updates. CEO Strauss Zelnick answered that the update cadence "has been pretty stable", that the company applies significant resources to the game, and that "we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward" (PCGamesN, GamingBolt). In February 2026 he had said something similar.
Read that carefully. It is a commitment to GTA Online as a service, not a promise about the PS4 version in particular. Take-Two has also said it does not plan to discuss what a new GTA Online for GTA 6 will look like before launch (God is a Geek).
The free GTA V upgrade to PS5
The most useful recent news for PS4 owners came on 17 June 2026. Rockstar announced that from 18 June 2026, owners of any PS4 version of GTA V (and the digital Xbox One version) can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version for free. Story progress and GTA Online characters can be transferred to the new version (Game Informer, Gematsu). When the PS5 version first launched in 2022, the upgrade cost $9.99 for a limited period.
What this means in practice: you do not lose GTA V or your GTA Online progress by moving to a PS5, and you do not need to buy GTA V again. The same announcement previewed the Kortz Center Heist update, which launched in July.
What has already been cut on PS4
One feature has gone. Rockstar removed the Rockstar Editor from the PS4 and Xbox One versions of GTA Online in February 2024, saying the change would help keep those versions stable and up to date with new content "for as long as possible" (Game Developer). Saved clips and projects on those consoles were deleted with it.
The shutdown speculation, labelled
Speculation You will see claims that GTA Online on PS4 will shut down when GTA 6 launches, or that the summer 2026 update was the last for last-gen. Neither comes from Rockstar. The May 2026 report about a "final last-gen update" (GamingHQ) was explicitly unconfirmed.
The precedent people point to is real: Rockstar ended GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360 on 16 December 2021, about a year after the PS5 launched. A similar move for PS4 one day would not be surprising, but it has not been announced. If Rockstar does announce one, we will add the date here and on our GTA Online on PS4 page.
What we suggest for PS4 players
- Keep playing. Nothing changes on 19 November for GTA 5 or GTA Online on PS4.
- Claim the free upgrade when you move. Upgrade GTA V on the new console and transfer your GTA Online character using Rockstar's migration option.
- Back up story saves. PS Plus cloud storage or a USB drive protects them before any console swap.
- Plan the PS5 on your schedule. Current Sony prices are in our cheapest PS5 for GTA 6 guide, and the trade-in guide helps cut the cost.
